West Lindsey District

West Lindsey District Council is the local (second tier) authority for the Lincoln Fringe area and is between the role played by Parish and Town Councils (first tier) and Lincolnshire County Council (third tier).

The district was formed on 1st April 1974 from the urban districts of Gainsborough, Market Rasen, along with Caistor Rural District, Gainsborough Rural District and Welton Rural District.

The council operates with a committee structure and elections occur using the 'whole council' system whereby elections for all of the council seats take place once every four years and elections take place for the county council in every second year.

The current composition of the authority is: Conservatives 20, Liberal Democrats 10, Labour 2, (Lincolnshire) Independent Group and Independents (non-aligned) 3; an overall majority of 3.
